Professor Kirchner is Advisory Editor and Chair of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of European Integration, holder of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, a Fellow of the British Academy of Social Sciences, and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the University Association of Contemporary Studies. His research interests are mainly on EU external relations and EU-Asia security relations. He has been a visiting professor at universities in various European countries, the United States and China. His recent book publications are (co-editor) Security Relations between China and the European Union, Cambridge University Press, 2016, and The Palgrave Handbook on EU-Asia Relations, 2013.
