Grant NCN Opus dla prof. dra hab. Konrada Kowalskiego

We are pleased to announce that in the recently concluded OPUS 27 competition of the National Science Centre, Prof. dr hab. Konrad Kowalski, from the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Lodz, received funding in the amount of PLN 1,294,298 for the implementation of the project "Dwa znaczy więcej niż jeden – biferrocenylowe generatory ROS jako inteligentne związki przeciwnowotworowe" [Two is more than one – biferrocenyl ROS generators as intelligent anticancer compounds].

The aim of the project is to obtain a new group of metalorganic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generators. These molecules will have two closely spaced ferrocenyl subunits as an important structural element. The molecular architecture defined in this way is a result of our previous research results, which indicate that dual-core metalorganic complexes (unlike their single-core analogues) are characterised by significant anti-cancer activity and selectivity towards cancer cells. Their mechanism of action is related to ROS, but its details are poorly understood. Therefore, the biological aim of the project will be to understand the molecular mechanisms responsible for the activity of bi-core ferrocene derivatives in cancer cells.

As part of the project, which will take 36 months, hiring a post-doc is assumed. We would like to congratulate the team on this significant success and wish them success in their research!
